Update: finally got Indie Dan’s precious, precious recommendation. After a little perspective I can see why Receptionista is so disgruntled.
After explaining the debacle to Indie Dan, he called up his professor to inquire about the status of the recommendation. The prof insisted that it was indeed in the mailbox, and when Indie Dan reported that the receptionist said it was not there, this was the prof’s response: “Oh, yeah ignore the front desk lady. Just walk past her like you own the place.”
Hearing that makes me greatly appreciate my little corner of campus, and that I am not stuck in the Zerglish lair department!

another shinny example of how we should be nicer to the tax clerks, receptionistas and all other workers who have to deal with the public because there are plenty of people who aren’t nice to them.
and even though you said being nice doesn’t always help, I think I would rather be nice than a bitch to them
