Fresh start

Mrs. Two is out, and she has been replaced by Miss Three, who is both younger than me and seems to be a bit shy. I’ve taught three classes with her so far, and we’ve barely exchanged any words outside of class beyond “nice to meet you.” I’ve tried to corner her for a chat, but she’s a skittish deer outside of class. I’m 99.9% sure it’s because she’s insecure about her English ability. The part-time intern who teaches the lower-level English classes acts exactly the same way. Though of course there is the 0.1% chance that it’s because I smell bad, or my attire makes her embarrassed for me or something. (Luckily for my insecurity, I can count on students to be blunt regarding such things).

Oh bun bo hue, if there was ever any hope of finding this served anywhere near me. Guess I'll have to reserve the ten days or however long it takes to try and make this from scratch.

This would bum me out more, but on the other hand, I might have a new conversation buddy at the school, which I’ve needed ever since my friend Kelly quit the school last semester. The music teacher took maternity leave last year, so I didn’t see her around, but now she’s back. She dropped by this morning to offer me coffee (which I definitely did NOT need, having suffered insomnia last night from over-caffeination, but I took it anyway), and she wanted to chat with me about Vietnam as she’d been there for her honeymoon. She even likes bun bo hue! After work, she gave me a lift home, and we commiserated about the dire state of Vietnamese cuisine options in Korea. I pledged to cook pho for her one of these days.

Between things like my bright students and the prospect of gaining another buddy here, I’m hopeful this spring will turn out to be a lot better than winter semester!

Be the first to like.
